A Family Guide To Keeping Youth Mentally Healthy & Drug Free
A Family Guide To Keeping Youth Mentally Healthy & Drug Free is a public education Web site developed by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) to communicate to parents and other caring adults about how they can help promote their child’s mental health and reduce his or her risk for becoming involved with alcohol, tobacco, and illegal drugs.
Building Blocks for a Healthy Future
Building Blocks for a Healthy Future is based on a series of materials that feature cartoon characters and offers developmentally appropriate learning products and activities for 3- to 6-year-olds and their parents and caregivers, including their teachers or daycare providers. The materials are designed to be used together and are available on the Web site. The site uses the characters; bright colors; and simple, engaging designs to appeal to the 3- to 6-year-old age group in an appropriate manner. The site features activities and content based on and related to the materials and curriculum. A section of the site for parents, caregivers, and teachers serves as a companion to the children’s section, giving resources and tools to adults so that they can help their children get the most out of the materials.

It has interesting facts for youth about the risk of alcohol and underage drinking and includes scenarios for role-playing to see how youth will react in certain situations and not feel that they are under pressure. It also contains a game for both youth and parents to play together to help parents understand some of the things that are going on in their child’s life.

The Governor’s Spouses Initiative Leadership to keep children alcohol free was established to make childhood drinking prevention a national healthy policy. This is a unique coalition of Governors’ spouses, Federal Agencies, and public and private organizations. The leadership is the only national effort that specifically targets prevention of drinking in the 9-to 15-year old age group.
Parents will find warning signs of drinking problems and will learn questions to ask about their child and community, prevention strategies parents can take, resources for effective parenting, including both useful publications and helpful organizations. This site also shows how parents can serve as a role model on the use of alcohol, control the availability of alcohol in their home and help set their child’s expectations/concerns in drinking behaviors.
